The action takes place immediately after the Trojan War (in the twelfth century B.C.) Action one. Andromache, widow of the Trojan hero Hector, and her son Astyanax have been captured by the Greeks and imprisoned. The Greeks oppose their king Pyrrhus' love for her, and even more so his intention to marry her. Attalus informs Andromache that marriage to Pyrrhus would save not only her but also her son. Phoenix warns that the Greeks would never allow this marriage and would prefer that Pyrrhus marry Hermione. Hermione, Pyrrhus' rejected lover, mourns her failure. Pyrrhus then appears, and Hermione meets him. Orestes, in love with Hermione, brings news that the Greeks demand that Astyanax be killed so that he cannot avenge his father. Pyrrhus declares his love for the unyielding Andromache and tries to parry Hermione's anger. Upset by Andromache's refusal and pressured by Hermione's rage, Pyrrhus agrees to extradite Astyanax to the Greeks. This forces Andromache to reconsider her refusal of Pyrrhus' offer. Pyrrhus is happy with the resurrected hope of marrying Andromache, but he is worried that the vengeful Hermione may take action. Action two. The obedient Andromache intends to remain loyal to Hector's memory and plans to kill herself as soon as Pyrrhus guarantees Astyanax's safety. Hermione asks Phoenix to tell Pyrrhus of her love and suffering. While, as Pyrrhus leads Andromache to the marriage altar, Hermione persuades Orestes to kill Pyrrhus, and Orestes, languishing in love, agrees. Phoenix and Pilad comment on Pyrrhus' insane actions. Torn between love and hate, Hermione is overcome with remorse. When Orestes returns to her with proof of the murder, Hermione denies her words. Orestes realizes he has been deceived. Hermione summons the Furies to destroy him, but Pylades, and his followers hide Orestes while Hermione curses the avenger. )
