High Knob Tower in Wise County, Virginia

High Knob Tower and Wise County High Point, Virginia Sitting at 4,223 feet above sea level, the High Knob Observation Tower is located at the highest point in Wise County, on the high point of Stone Mountain. High Knob is a unique geological feature that towers over most all of the mountains in this region. The tower offers stunning nearly 360 degree views. On a clear day, up to five states are visible. The new stone and steel tower opened in 2014. Sadly the original wooden structure, built in the 1930s as a fire look out, was destroyed by fire in the 1970s. Another wooden tower was promptly constructed, but it too was destroyed by fire in 2007. A local volunteer firefighter was charged with arson in that case. Thanks to public-private partnerships, the new tower was built.
