The TVR Griffith 200 (or Griffith Series 200) was a lightweight fibreglass sports car built by TVR. In the US the make was Griffith and the model was Griffith Series 200, while in the UK the make was TVR and the model was Griffith 200. Jack Griffith ran a car repair shop in the US with customers such as Gerry Sagerman and Mark Donohue who had both driven a TVR Grantura at Sebring International Raceway in 1962. The concept for the Griffith Series 200 was born at a dinner with Carroll Shelby, where Griffith said he could build a car that could outperform an AC Cobra. Jack Griffith came up with the idea for the car in 1964 and obtained the rights to market the cars in the US. Griffith first tried to fit the Ford V8 engine from Mark Donohue's AC Cobra into a Grantura TVR. Although this did not work, the idea prompted further discussions with TVR. Griffith wanted TVR to provide him with a modified TVR Grantura chassis, without engine or transmission. Finally TVR agreed to his request. In order to adapt the engine and gearbox to the car, part of the chassis wishbone was removed from the Grantura Mk3. Various parts of the chassis were simply hammered out until the transmission took its place. The brakes were not improved despite the addition of slightly larger 185 section tyres. The TVR Griffith Series 400 is the successor to the 200 and is a two-door sports coupe produced by Griffith Motor Company in Plainview, New York (Ford dealer in Plainview/Hicksville, NY, Long Island), between 1964 and 1967.
