Just a 20-minute drive from the center of Japan’s fifth biggest city of Sapporo, and just three minutes from my house, Sapporo Moiwa Ski Resort is the third oldest ski resort in Hokkaido. But since it opened its slopes in 1960, snowboarding has been prohibited. Since 2019, when I moved into its foothills, I have done what I swore I never would. As a diehard snowboarder, I took up skiing. The allure of Moiwa’s prohibited slopes were too much for me. In then end, it was a good thing. Now, I can snowboard and ski. And the better I got at skiing Moiwa, the more I wanted to rip down its slopes on a snowboard. Soon, the pull of Moiwa brought me to purchase a backcountry backpack, where I began doing my own backyard backcountry in the early hours of the day. Just as the sun rose over Sapporo, I would hop on my board and sail across the silky smooth snow covering Usagidaira Course, which I affectionately call “The White Rabbit.” But now, as of February 25, 2025, Mt. Moiwa Sapporo has opened its slopes to snowboarders. They call it a trial, but I surely hope that its slopes will stay open. I visited Moiwa, board in hand, on the opening night with my 8-year-old daughter and my school’s ski and board club. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate and the recent warm days made for an icy, rock-hard night. But I knew Moiwa had so much more to offer. On Friday, March 7th, I took a day off and my timing was perfect. Moiwa was filled with powder — a treasure trove of joy. I got my best day of the season and this is my love song to that day and to Moiwa. Please enjoy. #sapporomoiwayama #japow #hokkaidolove #snowboarding #localmountain #mtmoiwa 00:00 Intro 00:01:22 Rinkan Forest First Run 00:01:58 Rinkan Forest Pillows 00:02:50 Crystal Course Edge 00:03:23 Family Snow Cross 00:04:14 Dynamic Black Run 00:04:37 Family Snow Cross 2 00:05:27 Chasing the White Rabbit (Usagidaira) 00:06:45 Usagidaira Hikers’ Left 00:08:27 Gnarly Karamatsu 00:10:03 Karamatsu Right (B) Side 00:10:52 South Side Toilet Run 00:12:31 Panorama Left Side 00:14:15 Renraku-Ro Woods 00:16:13 The Kobayashi-San 00:16:53 Katsu-Curry (Pork Cutlet Curry) 00:17:43 Friendly and Out
