For example, there are almost two hundred different types of agave, out of which 75 percent are from Mexico. It is a very Mexican plant. The idea is for people to learn that each agave has a different taste, in the same way that occurs with wines, with the Cabernet grape, or the Merlot grape, or the Pinot Noir grape." 23. Pan of event STORYLINE: Move over tequila - Mexico is looking to promote its less well-known relative, mezcal. That was the aim of the first-ever artisanal distilled drinks festival, which took place in Mexico City on Saturday. Dozens of mezcal producers from all over the country offered tastings of their product in hopes of widening knowledge and interest in this largely Mexican drink. "The idea is for people to learn that each agave has a different taste, in the same way that occurs with wines, with the Cabernet grape or the Merlot grape or the Pinot Noir grape," festival organiser Juan Jesus Lozoya told AP Television News. According to Lozoya, there are nearly 200 different types of agave, most of which originate in Mexico. Like tequila, mezcal is made by distilling the fermented juice of agave cacti. Traditionally a cheap drink, it has long been considered the domain of college partygoers, eager to get to the fabled worm at bottom of each bottle. But production regulations in recent years have helped mezcal find its way into the upper echelon of the world of spirits, in part, by setting it apart from other alcoholic beverages. "I guarantee, 100 percent, that mezcal will not leave you with a hangover because it contains no yeasts, it contains no chemicals, it is naturally fermented," producer Maria del Refugio Cortez said. Nicolay Shkolyar, an economic advisor to the Russian Embassy in Mexico, said he was "interested in looking into the possibility of our men and women in Russia" tasting mezcal. Demand and production have rocketed in recent years.
