Following her previous project Jana Plays Scipriani, Lebanese cellist and educator Jana Semaan continues her mission of shedding light on lesser-known cello repertoire with this new release featuring the Capricci for Solo Cello by Joseph (Giuseppe Barone) Marie Clément Ferdinand Dall’Abaco (1710–1805). Born in Brussels to an Italian family, Dall’Abaco was the son of the renowned Veronese cellist and composer Evaristo Felice Dall’Abaco. He spent much of his career between the German-speaking courts and Italian musical circles. His works reflect a fusion of Italian lyricism and German contrapuntal sophistication. The Capricci are unaccompanied, imaginative pieces that explore the expressive and technical capabilities of the Baroque cello. A capriccio—from the Italian word for whim or fantasy—is typically free in form and inventive in character, often challenging the performer’s agility, artistry, and interpretive creativity. These eleven capricci range from meditative and lyrical to rhythmically bold and virtuosic, showcasing both the depth and versatility of the instrument. The original manuscript of these capricci ends abruptly at No. 11, with the final piece left incomplete. In this recording, Jana Semaan stays true to the source and performs No. 11 exactly as written. To complete the typical 12-piece structure often found in Baroque collections, she adds a twelfth capriccio, concluding it with her own stylistic ending. This is a live recording, performed on an unidentified German Baroque cello from the early 18th century, captured at Redbooth Studios.
