Comparison test of four Boss overdrive/distortion pedals: SD-1 Super Overdrive (current production Taiwan) OD-2 Turbo Overdrive (black label Japan 80s) OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion (silver label Taiwan early 90s) and DS-1 Distortion (black label Japan 80s) Four parts - from soft clipping to full distortion. From the four pedals, SD-1 is presented at the last (4th) part just for refference since it has been already at maximum clipping at 3rd part. Gear: 2005 Gibson Firebird V, GLEARSOUND FET/BJT amp, Sony Handycam HDR-CX550 (one of the best cameras of the last decade in terms of sound capture). My personal thoughts...All four pedals have their own character and I thing they are very good. For each one: SD-1 is a wonderful pedal if you don't need to go to hard rock territory...very "organic" detailed sound, very touch sensitive. OD-2 is similar to SD-1 plus the "turbo" function that gets the sound into the full range of hard-rock. If you want more gain - but still not into heavy area -OD-2 is the tool. Only two things that I want to mention are (a) at the "turbo-off" position it is weaker than SD-1 and (b) at high levels it gave me a feeling of mid-scooped eq. DS-1 is a legend if you are into heavy music. Still my main use of it is as a booster. At soft clipping it lacks warmth but after mid-pot it delivers what it was designed for. OS-2 is my personal pedal at this test (all others were borrowed) and it is my favourite for the last 30yrs for a reason: versatility. It starts almost at the low level of SD-1 and ends to the high gain level of DS-1 (with the use of the "color" pot). In comparison to other pedals, at soft clipping it immitates SD-1 very well. At medium-high level it has more "creamy" sound compared to OD-2 and finally at high-gain distortion level it is a monster just like DS-1.
