Autorack trains are freight trains that carry brand new automobiles from the factory to their next destination. Since the development of the automobile, car manufacturers and railroads have worked together to create more efficient and better methods of shipping new vehicles from the factory to dealerships around the nation. Double-door boxcars were originally used, but as the demand and size of vehicles grew, it was clear that something needed to be done. In the mid 1960s, Bethlehem Steel Company (BSC) parted with the Trailer Train Company (TTX) and other railroads to create the standard for transporting new automobiles. BSC created a flatcar that was almost 90 feet long and could built with either two racks or three depending on the railroad's preference. Today, Gunderson and Thrall are the main providers of autorack freight cars. Each company's version of the autorack is distinct and unique. “Bi-level” autoracks are intended to carry taller vehicles, such as SUVs or vans, while “tri-level” autoracks, having an additional deck, handle shorter-in-height standard or compact autos in the same given space.
