The Yonghe Temple (The Lama Temple), located in the northeast corner of Beijing's urban area, was originally built as a residence by Emperor Kangxi in the 33rd year of his reign (1694) and granted to his fourth son, Yinzheng, who later became Prince Yong of Qing Dynasty. In the third year of Emperor Yongzheng's reign (1725), the prince's mansion was converted into an imperial palace known as the Yonghe Palace. In the thirteenth year of his reign (1735), after Emperor Yongzheng passed away, his coffin was placed there temporarily. As a result, the original green glazed tiles of the main halls were changed to yellow ones. Because Emperor Qianlong was born here, making it the childhood home of two emperors, Yonghe Palace gained the title "the blessed land where dragons once dwelled." Therefore, its halls are covered with yellow glazed tiles and vermilion walls, just like those of the Forbidden City. In the ninth year of Emperor Qianlong's reign (1744), Yonghe Palace was transformed into a lama temple. A high-ranking minister was specially appointed to manage its affairs, and it became the central authority through which the Qing government administered Tibetan Buddhist affairs nationwide. The Yonghe Temple was the most prestigious Buddhist temple throughout China during the middle and late periods of the Qing Dynasty.
