In this Bonsai video I show you how to prune Japanese Maple Bonsai in Winter! Mapes are a popular choice for Bonsai because of their beautiful leaves, that change color throughout the year and display a beautiful winter silhouette. I explain various pruning techniques that I use on maple trees of different sizes and developmental stages, such as pruning for ramification and encouraging smaller internodes, shaping raw material with future designs in mind including a tapering trunk, and importantly, when NOT to prune a maple bonsai during winter. I also cover how to apply guy wire and protect the branches from wire scarring using gaff tape, as well as how to enhance maple bonsai still in development through structural pruning that sets each tree up for success in the upcoming growing season. As a bonus in this video, I perform a winter wash, misting the trees with Lime Sulphur to eliminate most of the insects and fungal spores that may lay dormant over the winter. Japanese Maples are part of the Acer Palmatum family of trees. They are a diverse group within the maple family and have origins in Japan, China and Korea and come in a wide range of variations from leaf colors, from the deep reds of Deshojo to the vibrant oranges and greens in Katsura. They are a great choice for Bonsai because of their beautiful colored bark that takes on a more rugged look with age. With attentive pruning and proper care, they can flourish for up to 100 years bringing joy and serenity to any space.
