Explore the radical idea that consciousness is ubiquitous and exists at scales beyond the range of human experience. Dr. John Pickering & Prof. Thomas Hills introduce the philosophical idea that consciousness is not reducible to neuropsychology and much less to physics. Prof. Thomas Hills studies how people search for things. He is trained as a worm biologist and is now a professor of Psychology at the University of Warwick, where he works on people, who just so happen to search for things like worms do. One can go far with a minimal mind, and he tries to. Dr. John Pickering is a Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at Warwick University. After degrees in Psychology from Edinburgh and Sussex universities, Dr Pickering held appointments at Rochester and Stanford. He then returned to the UK to join the psychology department of Warwick University, where he still teaches. His overlapping interests include process thought, the comparison of Western and Eastern psychological traditions, ecopsychology, biosemiotics and cultural evolution. He is interested in postmodernism because he finds it useful as a framework for his various interests. Encounters unites visionary thinkers to illuminate transformative ideas through the art of conversation. These dialogues delve into the latest cutting-edge theories, demystify profound concepts, and spotlight ground-breaking insights. Recorded on 06 December 2023 at 1 Mill Street, Leamington Spa.
