A talk on how cigarette smoke causes heart attacks, given by Dr Stephen White from the University of Bristol. Summary: The 2 most frequent precipitating causes of a heart attack are thrombotic complications of atherosclerotic plaque build up in a coronary artery; most are caused by the plaque rupturing, however about a quarter are caused when the endothelial layer detaches exposing the artery wall. This type of heart attack (endothelial erosion) is most frequently seen in smokers, however the mechanism responsible for detachment has not been identified. This talk briefly summarises what is known and presents his work using a tissue culture model, created to investigate this process.
