TLDR: There's a lot of awesome biochemistry going on at lots of scales; Some of the most exciting new work involves using non-natural chemistry to manipulate, adapt, and probe, biological molecules (especially keep your eye out for antibody therapies like ADCs (antibody drug conjugates); Despite robots and AI protein biochemistry is still a very important skillset – perhaps even more so as those high-scale techniques generate lots of hypotheses to test at the small scale. And AI tools are using experimental data. So we need people to collect that data – or at least develop techniques to get robots to collect it. Optimization is a key part of science, especially work with proteins. And there's still a lot of real knowledge needed! Bottom line – if you're fortunate enough to get the chance to train in protein biochemistry, don't be scared off by the rise of AI. If anything, it's great at helping you generate hypotheses. Which then people need to test. And that takes skill! I'm feeling really grateful for my training and for the opportunity to attend the ASBMB (American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) conference with my awesome student, Alice!
