Catherine of Valois, a medieval queen and grandmother of the Tudor dynasty, left behind no surviving portrait, but her 15th-century effigy may still preserve her face. In 1437, the Queen of England and mother of Henry VI was laid in state beneath banners and cloth of gold. Her wooden effigy, possibly modeled from a death mask, was created to represent royal presence at the moment of farewell. Queen Catherine of Valois was the daughter of Charles VI of France, the widow of Henry V of England, and later the wife of Owen Tudor — making her the grandmother of Henry VII and a pivotal figure in the foundations of the Tudor dynasty. Though few personal records survive, her life connects the Hundred Years’ War, the Lancastrian court, and the rise of Tudor rule. In this episode of Effigies of Power, we examine what survives of Catherine’s effigy at Westminster Abbey, what historical accounts reveal about her burial and regalia, and attempt a careful reconstruction of how this 15th-century medieval queen may have appeared at her final farewell. Through art history, illuminated manuscripts, medieval royal burial practices, and modern digital reconstruction techniques, we explore how royal image, memory, and identity were staged in death, and how a wooden effigy may preserve one of the most intimate royal likenesses to survive from the fifteenth century. I hope you enjoy learning more about this unburied Queen. EFFIGIES OF POWER: ELIZABETH OF YORK • The Funeral Effigy of Elizabeth of York | ...
