Alcatraz Island has been home to a military fort, an infamous federal prison, and a Native American civil rights movement. Today, Alcatraz Island is a National Park, attracting over 1.4 million visitors each year. Alcatraz Island is situated 1.25 miles off the coast of San Francisco California, in the heart of San Francisco Bay. The island is a rugged landscape with cliffs that rise as high as fifty feet, earning it the nickname ‘The Rock.’ In 1847, US Government engineers first surveyed Alcatraz Island for the location of a lighthouse in San Francisco Bay. In 1850, the military proposed a 3-point defensive strategy for San Francisco Bay, with forts on both sides of the Golden Gate, as well as a smaller fort on Alcatraz Island. By 1907, the Army decommissioned the fort as they decided it was obsolete. Within a year of decommissioning the fort, the army begam building a huge concrete cell house and by 1915 it housed military prisoners. Alcatraz Island was transferred from the War Department to the Department of Justice in 1934 and reopened as a federal penitentiary. Alcatraz prison housed 1543 men over 29 years and it was thought that it was escape proof, due to the chilly waters of San Francisco Bay. However, there were fourteen escape attempts involving thirty-six inmates. Of those attempts, twenty-three were recaptured, seven killed, and three drowned. The remaining three were from the famous attempt in June of 1962 by Frank Morris and brother John and Clarence Anglin, who launched a makeshift raft into San Francisco Bay and remain missing to this day. Alcatraz Federal Prison was closed in 1963, due to high maintenance and operational costs. On November 20th of 1969, a large group of Native Americans began a 19-month occupation of Alcatraz Island. The occupation was to protest unjust federal policies, such as termination policy, treaty violations, and historical injustices. The occupation drew national attention to Native American issues and is considered as a pivotal moment in the broader Red Power Movement. At the height of the occupation, four hundred people were living on Alcatraz Island, including families and children. The occupation ended on June 11th of 1971. In 1972, Alcatraz Island was designated as part of the newly created Golden Gate National Recreation Area. In the fall of 1973, Alcatraz Island was opened to the public at a National Park. #alcatraz #alcatrazprison #sanfrancisco Music by Epidemic Sound: https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Please be sure to like, comment and subscribe to our channel at: / @blendedtravels
