And finally, it’s done! I had to travel from Oceania to South America, return to my remote hometown, and make it to my backyard to literally get my hands into this beautiful process of building our very own handcrafted pizza oven! It was originally meant to be built in 2022, during my previous visit to my home country, but I ran out of time—or, in other words, I didn’t prioritize it—and I left with almost all the gathered materials waiting for three years to be transformed into this magical and ancestral cooking appliance. As you can see, this is not a conventional pizza oven. Why is that? Because it’s a hybrid between the traditional mud-and-brick ovens typically made in the region I come from, and a pizza oven. My grandparents built mud-and-brick ovens, and my brother learned the craft from them. He was the one who mainly guided the process and knew how to prepare the mud, while I added certain elements such as the tiles, the door, and the front chimney to turn it into a true pizza-making beauty! The materials: The oven is built from two main components: a mix made of clay-rich soil (dug and brought from our grandparents’ land), cow manure, straw, a bit of sand, and bricks. These bricks were recycled from huge old charcoal ovens on our land that had collapsed after being abandoned for 80 years. Back in 2022, my brother and I dug them out by hand. So yes, this project is pretty special to me. Apologies for the low-quality recording and the very basic video editing (first time!). I had to record everything with my phone, and in the end I ran out of memory, so I couldn’t capture the first fire or the full pizza-making process. But at least I got something!
