And its fossils have been discovered in deposits of early Devonian age. • Otto Jaekel is the german paleontologist who described this species in 1914 and the generic name is a combination of his name “Jaekel” and the Greek word “pteron” meaning “wing”. • Based on the isolated fossil remains of a large Chelicerae or claw from the Emsian Klerf Formation of Willwerth, Germany, jaekelopterus rhenaniae has been estimated to have reached a size of around 2.3 – 2.6 meters making it the largest arthropod ever discovered. • The robust chelicerae and compound eyes of Jaekelopterus rhenaniae indicate it was active and powerful with high visual acuity, most likely an Apex predator in the ecosystem of Early Devonian Euramerica. • Although eurypterids such as jaekelopterus are often called sea scorpions the strata in which jaekelopteurs fossils have been found suggest that it lived in fresh water environment. • The reason behind the sudden death of the sea scorpions and scores of other marine and terrestrial animals of the period was due to the mighty Permian Extinction. This is the worst extinction event in the history of life. Took the lives of more than 96% of all marine life on earth.
