This solo performance of “White Gin” was filmed & recorded live at Marrickville Town Hall, Sydney Australia. A sparse arrangement of voice, acoustic guitar & harmonica — no edits, no overdubs — just the writer performing their song the way it first entered the world. * This is Song #38 of Paul Buckberry's #Project2025 series — one new performance every Monday for 52 weeks. * 🎙️IN HIS OWN WRITE: * I wrote “White Gin” after several long, honest conversations with a woman named Kate whom I met at a Sydney soup kitchen during my itinerant years. She was vulnerable, lonely & needed someone to hear her. She told me about her only child, Jesse & how she'd made mistakes she didn’t want her daughter to repeat. The lyric came from Kate’s own story. * Kate inspired 3 songs and I was fortunate enough to play all 3 for her. When she heard "White Gin" she said, “I’d love Jesse to hear it.” But we never got the chance. By the time I returned to the soup kitchen, Kate was gone & no one knew where Jesse was. I’ve carried the weight of her story ever since. * I began performing “White Gin” in the late 90s, adapting it into a solo folk format so it could survive in my street performer sets. * This acoustic rendition is a love letter to the story behind the song. I deeply appreciate Kate chose to share her story with me, that she found enough merit in it to want to share it with her one and only daughter. It is a small comfort to know Kate’s Jesse is out there someplace & may yet get to hear the song. * 🎶 Keep an eye on my / @thepaulbuckberry 🔔 Subscribe for weekly #Project2025 songs * #folkmusic #indigenousrights #generationaltrauma #socialjustice #brokenpromises #lostheritage #personalhealing #coloniallegacy #white #reconciliation #culturalidentity #pain #forgiveness #healingjourney #SingerSongwriter #IndieFolk #nooverdubs #LiveRecording #onetake #StorytellingSongs #AustralianMusic #nomiming #AIfreezone #MarrickvilleTownHall
