After years of tight, side-scrolling run-and-gun action, Konami tried to modernize the formula with full 3D movement and camera-driven combat. Unfortunately, while the ambition is clear, the execution doesn’t quite live up to the Contra legacy. 🎮 Gameplay Legacy of War shifts from classic side-scrolling chaos to third-person 3D action, changing how Contra feels at a fundamental level. 3D movement and aiming: Players navigate open areas, rotating and firing at enemies across wide environments. Classic weapons return: Spread guns, lasers, and heavy firepower are still part of the arsenal. Enemy waves and bosses: Familiar Contra-style enemies and oversized mechanical bosses still bring explosive moments. Two-player co-op: You can tackle the campaign with a friend, though coordination is harder in the new perspective. The problem lies in how the game controls and plays. Movement feels stiff, aiming lacks precision, and the camera often works against the player rather than with them. 🎨 Presentation Early 3D visuals: Environments are polygonal and sparse, with flat textures typical of mid-90s 3D experiments. Enemy designs: Bosses still carry that over-the-top Contra energy, but regular enemies can look repetitive. Soundtrack: Industrial, militaristic tracks try to match the intensity, though they lack the punch of earlier Contra scores. Explosions and effects: Plenty of action on-screen, but visual clarity suffers during hectic moments. ⚠️ Weak Spots Camera issues: The biggest flaw — awkward angles make it hard to track enemies and avoid damage. Clunky controls: Turning, aiming, and moving simultaneously can feel sluggish and imprecise. Loss of classic pacing: The fast, reflex-based flow of 2D Contra doesn’t translate cleanly into 3D. Difficulty frustration: Many deaths feel caused by camera or control limitations rather than player error. ✅ Final Verdict Contra: Legacy of War is an interesting but flawed experiment in bringing a legendary 2D action series into 3D. While it has moments of classic Contra chaos and some memorable boss fights, the camera and control issues prevent it from reaching the heights of earlier entries. It’s more of a historical curiosity than a must-play, but for die-hard Contra fans or those curious about mid-90s 3D growing pains, it’s worth a look. 💬 Do you think Contra works better in 2D, or could a modern 3D version finally get it right? 🔔 Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more Sega Saturn reviews, Contra retrospectives, and retro action deep dives! #retronomicon #ContraLegacyOfWar #Contra #SegaSaturn #RetroGaming #RunAndGun #Konami #ClassicGaming #90sGaming
