The LSU Wind Ensemble, under the direction of conductor Damon Talley, presents ‪a world premiere of "Pangea Proxima" by Erik Santos. // I present this musical composition, with great respect, to the consortium of the 16 universities of North America’s South Eastern Conference (SEC), who commissioned this new work for symphony band. To quote poet Rainer Maria Rilke (transl.) - “...As once, the wingéd energy carried you over many youthful abysses, now, boldly, build the unheard bridges...” Living day to day with this hundred-year-old poem about building bridges, has made me contemplate an unimaginable conversation of past and future, of earth and spirit, in the paradoxical energy of the unhidden yet imponderable present. Pangea Proxima is the theory that all the continents, as we now know them, were once, and will be again, a single landmass - a supercontinent called Pangea. When Where that unification may happen, and how many times it might’ve already happened, is all conjecture. What would life be in Pangea Proxima? We’ll never know, though I imagine it a highly competitive place, a race to live. What is the point of pondering Pangea? Where When exactly is it - are we never not in the Pangeaic process of breaking up and reforming? Somehow we are all always a part of this, and it is all always a part of us, unus mundus, coming and going, seen and unseen - but what does it all mean? Here’s what I heard...
