Dr. Glenn Hinson was born in St. Louis, MO, July 27, 1931, but grew up on a farm near Sullivan MO. After completing a BA at Washington University in St. Louis in 1954, he enrolled in Southern Seminary, where he earned the BD (1957) and the ThD (1962) degrees. He earned the DPhil from Oxford University in 1974. He taught New Testament for one year (1959-1960), then Church History (1960-1992) at Southern. In 1992 he joined the faculty of the newly founded Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, VA, where he taught until retirement in 1999. He also taught at Wake Forest University, the Baptist Seminary of Kentucky and several other schools. At Southern Seminary, he pioneered course work in spirituality that introduced students to the writings of Christian seekers from throughout church history and across Christian traditions. Hinson’s views on ecumenism and biblical interpretation made him a frequent target of fundamentalists. Nevertheless, he persisted in his vocation and influenced thousands of future ministers and professors as a classroom teacher and doctoral supervisor. Glenn is the author, editor, or translator of 35 books and approximately 1,200 articles and book reviews. He served as editor of Review & Expositor for 12 ½ years, as the initial editor of Baptist Peacemaker (10 years), and as editor for the first two volumes of Die Religion in Geschichte und Gegenwart. He and Martha Burks married in 1956. After 61 years of marriage Martha passed away in 2018. They have two children — Christopher Glenn and Elizabeth Hinson-Hasty — and two grandchildren — Garrison Douglass and Emeline.
