Eric Adler, associate professor of classics at the University of Maryland, explores the role of classics in higher education in the United States. Canonical classical authors were seen as the conduit for the moral perfection of the human being — the goal of higher education in early America.Yet in post-bellum American higher education (including in the period of the culture wars), this notion of using classical authors as instruments to moral perfection has disappeared. In his talk, Adler will focus on what is lost in education when a culture no longer believes in the perfection of the human being as education's goal, preferring a skills-based approach to knowledge. The talk, held October 21, 2016, draws from his new book, "Classics, Culture Wars, and Beyond" (University of Michigan Press, 2016). This event is co-sponsored by the McFarland Center and the Department of Classics.
