Today the river was running a bit high, so I decided to try pumping the foil in the current. I had already located a tree from which to launch with a dead start at this water level. The branch isn't very stable, but since I launch against the current, that helps with the dead start. It's typical to miss the first launch, but I didn't miss any more. Pumping against the current helps, but the river was very choppy, and there were many forces pushing and releasing the foil continuously, not evenly or predictably. This required a considerable expenditure of energy. The good thing is that as you drop, the current carries you back to the launch point with little effort. I tried to catch a small wave, but it seemed quite difficult, and the depth wasn't very great, so it wasn't advisable to risk it. I practiced turns with and against the current, and turning downstream is considerably more difficult. It was fun as a test, but it's not a comfortable spot for pumping. I'll try it again when I have a good wave nearby to surf.
