The Sarasota Police Department is honoring the life and service of retired K-9 Coti, who worked beside Officer Nick Dominis from 2014 until his medical retirement in 2021. Coti passed away on Sunday, Feb. 15. To recognize his dedication to the City of Sarasota, Officer Dominis and members of the K-9 Unit escorted Coti on a ceremonial final ride past police headquarters on Tuesday. The community stood alongside the department during Tuesday’s farewell tribute. Coti made his final journey in K-9 Tahoe # 1655, the patrol vehicle he proudly served in throughout his career, driven by Officer Dominis. “K-9 Coti wasn’t just my K-9 partner. He was my protector. For seven years, he served the City of Sarasota with unwavering loyalty, courage and heart. From long nights on patrol to SWAT callouts, he never hesitated. He gave everything he had to our community. I’m forever grateful for the time we served together and I’m incredibly proud of the legacy he leaves behind,” said Sarasota Police Officer Nick Dominis. Born in May 2013, K-9 Coti was 12 years old. After graduating from K-9 school, he was partnered with Officer Dominis in 2014. Throughout his years of service, he played a vital role in patrol operations, including tracking, conducting article and building searches, providing handler protection and assisting with apprehensions. He also supported the department’s SWAT response and assisted neighboring law enforcement agencies when mutual aid was requested. Following his medical retirement in 2021, K-9 Coti enjoyed his remaining years at home as a treasured member of the Dominis family.
