Lauderdale Yacht Club is perched on the foreshore at Lauderdales stunning Roches Beach on Frederick Henry Bay, Tasmania. The very popular, and fun to sail Paper Tiger Catamarans are raced there! I've been racing Paper Tigers on and off as an adult for more than 30 years, most of those years proudly representing Lauderdale YC, but my very first sail on a Paper Tiger was at Torbay YC, Auckland NZ with a friend, in a fresh sea breeze... we were only about 12-13 yrs old...what a memorable experience that was! For me they are as much fun to sail today as they were back then!! This 4.3 mtr (14 foot) Catamaran was designed in New Zealand and has stood the test of time, they weigh only 75kgs fully rigged, can be built out of any material and have state of the art carbon fibre rudders and centreboards, so are incredibly responsive, quick to tack (someone once called it the Laser of Catamarans) and are very fast, considering their small sail area! (I have briefly hit 18 knots on a reach, and regularly hit 13 knots upwind in a sea breeze) They are easy to sail, but challenging to sail fast at all angles, and in different wind and sea states, and is maybe part of the reason they are so addictive...there's always something new to discover and/or learn! The Lauderdale fleet is friendly and helpful, but also fiercely competitive! They bat well above their weight Nationally and Internationally, with numerous top 10 skippers, National and International Podium skippers, and National and International Champions. They boast eight National Championship Trophies, including the current National Champion, and an International Trophy spanning 20 years! Most important, Lauderdale Yacht Club, run by volunteer members has been a huge supporter of the Paper Tiger Class, holding and running numerous National and State Championships. Many skippers say their most enjoyable Regattas have been sailed there, because of the beautiful location of course, but also because of the very welcoming culture, and professionalism of the club!
