Various of artillery firing at unknown targets LEADIN: An offensive to take back Iraq's central Salahuddin province from the Islamic State group is underway. Shiite militiamen are heading towards the contested area, which includes the Beiji oil refinery. STORYLINE: On the road again. These soldiers, part of the Shiite militia al-Hashed al-Shaabi, are making their way to Islamic State-held territory. Their aim; to bring the area under Iraqi control. In their sights is the Beiji oil refinery - the country's largest. Their deployment is part of the second phase of a large-scale military operation to drive IS from central Salahuddin province. Beiji, some 250 kilometres (155 miles) north of Baghdad, has changed hands several times as both sides battle for control. But this time they are confident they can take back the area. ''We are ready to drive IS militants (out of Salahuddin). The fighters' morale is very high,'' says an unnamed commander as he meets and greets soldiers. The town of Beiji is strategically significant as it lies on the road to IS-held Mosul, Iraq's second largest city. The operation, 'At your command, messenger of God', was announced by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's office early this week. Iraqi troops backed by US airstrikes and Shiite and Sunni militias recaptured Salahuddin's provincial capital, Tikrit, in April, but their efforts have since stalled. Iraqi and US officials have said the extreme summer heat caused the setbacks. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: [email protected] (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
