The Group B Strep test is usually given between 35-37 weeks of pregnancy and will determine if you need to take antibiotics during labor. Group B Strep (aka GBS) can pose risks to your baby, but the requirement of antibiotics for all positive tests is also extreme. In this video I talk about the risks of both and I'll give you tips to help get you a negative test result, which is your best course of action in not needing antibiotics. Ultimately, if you can improve your vaginal flora, GBS will less likely be a problem. Even if you already tested positive, you may still be negative by birth, so taking these steps can help reverse that, and you can try to get retested. Group B strep is a common bacterium that's often carried in the intestines or lower GI tract. It's usually harmless in healthy adults, but it can cause baby to get group B strep while traveling through the birth canal. Most babies born to women carrying group B strep are healthy BUT the few who are infected during labor can become critically ill. Antibiotics during labor ARE usually safe but in rare cases can cause severe allergic reactions. Other risks to administration include infection and antibiotic resistance. And in addition to killing the bad bacteria, it also kills the good bacteria. Especially when you're pregnant, you DO want your baby to get all the good bacteria in the vaginal canal. TIPS TO GET A NEGATIVE TEST FOR GROUP B STREP 1. Take probiotics (specifically Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Bifidobacterium) Klaire Labs Ther-Biotic - https://amzn.to/3qLPBbJ Klaire Labs Lactoprime - https://amzn.to/3bIbbcI 2. Use probiotics as suppository at night 3. Eat garlic (and for 1 week or a few days leading up to the test, alternate putting probiotics and garlic in your yoni at night) 4. Eat more fermented foods - kefir, yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchee, beet kvass, kombucha, etc. This all feeds good bacteria in your gut and makes it more diverse. 5. Lower your sugar, flour, and vegetable oil intake. 6. Increase resistant starches - good bacteria love them! 7. Improve your immune system - echinacea, vitamin C, vitamin E, etc. 8. Never douche Also, if you're able to have a water birth, a number of studies show that giving birth in water reduced the risk of baby contracting GBS from low-risk moms.
