Oscar nominees Penélope Cruz, Aunjanue Ellis, Ciarán Hinds, Kodi Smit-McPhee recall mentors who chan

(18 Mar 2022) OSCAR NOMINEES PENELOPE CRUZ, AUNJANUE ELLIS, CIARAN HINDS, KODI SMIT-MCPHEE RECALL MENTORS WHO CHANGED THEIR LIVES Had key mentors not intervened in their lives, Oscar nominees Aunjanue Ellis and Ciarán Hinds might become mediocre lawyers instead of accomplished actors. "I was going down a path that was not going to be creative at all. I was going to be somebody's bad attorney. I was going to lose a lot of cases," said Ellis, who's nominated for best supporting actor for her performance in "King Richard." But a man named Jim Barnhill intervened. "He said, 'No, try this direction.' And I did. And he saw something in me that I didn't see in myself," Ellis said recently at a luncheon honoring Oscar nominees. Ellis also cited a woman named Regina Turner who drove Ellis from Mississippi to see her first play, "Fences" starring Courtney B. Vance, and her mother as having a profound impact on her life. As for mom, Ellis said "she showed me that you can do things and not give a ---- about what anybody thinks about you." Hinds said he was studying law at Queen's University in his hometown of Belfast at the behest of his parents, who wanted him to have something practical under his belt. "But it turns out I was kind of majoring in snooker and poker," Hinds said. Much like, Ellis, he said someone else saw something special in him. "There was a man called Desmond Merriman there and he'd been at school with me. He was a senior and he was now a law lecturer, and he suggested that I transfer to study English and drama because I think he saw something in me that had something, though you don't know yourself. You really don't." So Hinds, who is nominated for a best supporting actor for "Belfast," said he applied to theater school in London, calling it "a good time." "It was 1973 and the Troubles have been going on for three years and it was getting, just the malevolence that was around and it was very violent, very dangerous. And at the same time, you didn't want to abandon people and family. But at the same time, for a young man at that time, it was kind of healthy to get out and to see the wider world a bit and not be locked in and entrenched into that kind of narrowness that was happening at the time. So I do believe I was very, very fortunate," he said. Penélope Cruz credits all the directors who gave her a start, particularly longtime collaborator Pedro Almovodar, and her parents, of course. "My parents for not invalidating me when I said, 'I want to be an actress' and for just allowing me to try," said Cruz, who won an Oscar in 2009 and is nominated again this year for best actress for her performance in "Madres Paralelas." Kodi Smit-McPhee, who is nominated for best supporting actor for "The Power of The Dog," had to credit his father, not only the one in real life but also some of the ones on screen. The Oscars will be held on March 27 in Los Angeles.
