THE LAST DOJO is a love letter in the form of a short film to master Fumio Demura's legendary dojo in Santa Ana, California. Throughout the years students and martial arts giants have trained on the mats housed within this humble structure made of wood and plaster. As all things come to an end, Demura sensei dojo's final chapter was brought about by the city claiming ownership of the property through eminent domain. William Christopher Ford (Karate Kid - 3) came to me with a simple request to capture Demura sensei's thoughts about the demise of his beloved dojo and his thoughts about his life in the martial arts. While filming the conversation between sensei Ford and Demura sensei, it struck me that instead of a simple archiving of the moment, there is actually an important story that could be shared. So this is how "The Last Dojo" was born. There are plenty of personal connections within the history of this collaboration. William and I share the same sensei, Richard Rabago, who happens to be my cousin. When Richard passed I reconnected with William and that is when he asked me to film the conversation between him and Demura sensei. Our editor and producing partner Nate Joseph and I have worked on several projects in the past as has our uber talented composer Randy Miller. I asked both Nate and Randy to join William and I on this journey. We are blessed to have their contribution of passion and craft to this project. I hope you enjoy our love letter to Demura sensei's dojo and his students. So many things are temporary in our world. But the essence of "The Last Dojo" will live on in our hearts in this life and beyond.
