An easy to understand explanation of an incisional hernia which is also called a surgical hernia. These hernias are common after surgery. Some centres report as high as 30 percent of patients getting these type of hernias after abdominal surgery. This is perhaps correct for emergency major abdominal surgery as the patients are very sick and healing of their wounds as not as good as of those patients who are fit when they undergo surgery. These hernias are certainly less common after keyhole or laparoscopic surgery as the size of the scars is much smaller as compared with open operations.
