Screening of Local Bacterial Isolates for Antibiotic Properties

Student: Maya Scarpaci Category: Class Project Antibiotics have been the saving grace of health and medicine since the discovery of Penicillin, but over the past 50 years there has been a large gap in knowledge. Less novel antibiotics are currently being discovered, which places extra reliance on the current ones being used. Because of this, the rate of antibiotic resistance rises as antibiotic discovery remains near stagnant. This experiment uses locally collected bacterial isolates to test for antibiotic and biochemical properties. The goal for this experiment and its future is to discover and identify novel antibiotics and the organism(s) that produced it. These test results bring up many questions and options for further research and discovery of novel antibiotics and help in the fight against antibiotic resistance.
