His grandfather, a longtime cigar enthusiast, is in his 90s, and has largely stopped smoking. He didn't keep a large collection, and left his remaining cigars were in a box in his study. By the time Charles-Philippe found them, they were very old and dry, so he decided he'd try and revive them. [01:33] Seasonal Variation: With cigars left out for short periods, we've used Boveda packs to bring them back. We're not familiar with all extremes. For example, cigars in Death Valley near 0% relative humidity and 100+ degree heat might not be salvageable. With 65% indoor RH like we're filming in, you probably could leave cigars out safely. Deeper into the winter, however, the inside RH approaches 20%. [02:51] Rehydration Method: What we would do here is take an airtight container, like a tupperdor or Boveda humidor bag. This container should not already have cigars in it. First, you add the cigars to the container, and then use a succession of Boveda packs with different relative humidities. Gradually work your way up in humidity from the ambient RH where you found the cigars. For example, if your cigars were sitting out in RH well below 32%, you'd start there, then swap the Boveda packs. You'd go from 32% to 49%, 58%, 62%, 65%, 69%. [03:37] Should I Gradually Rehydrate? Paul and Boveda's Rob Gagner got in a heated discussion of this topic. Rob didn't think the intermediate steps would be necessary and wouldn't shock the cigars, as they can only take on so much moisture. Further, once in an environment below their own RH, cigars lose moisture quicker. However, Paul's thoughts were that if you throw cigars in a glass of water, it would take on humidity quicker. Overly moist air might work similarly, and notching up the relative humidity would avoid this. Paul compares it to re-softening leather; doing so gradually avoids unevenness and, therefore, cracking. [04:50] Using Distilled Water: When CP first started researching rehydrating cigars, he found a method involving distilled water. This required a sponge damp with distilled water inside a perforated ziploc bag. Your cigars go in another perforated ziploc bag, and both bags go inside an intact and sealed ziploc bag. While we get the logic of such methods, they give you zero control. Further, with no hygrometer, you don't know what's happening, and Ziploc bags aren't fully airtight. [05:47] Our Recommendations: You'll need these: • High quality airtight container • Smart hygrometer • Reliable humidification source, like Boveda With cigars in one end and a hygrometer in the other end, you'd ratchet up the RH every 2-4 weeks. For a situation like CP's, which have gone brittle, this might take 3+ months. This is a slow process; cigars lose moisture 4x faster than they can re-hydrate. Keep your rehydrating cigars in a separate environment from your main collection. REMEMBER to comment! What is your experience with reviving dried-out cigars?
