Zeybek in Tire: Folk dance in a small town of Izmir

In this video of Dance Journals, we are visiting Tire, a beautiful town of Izmir. Izmir is a city on the western coast of Turkey. Izmir is also my hometown; I lived over there until I began my university degree in Istanbul. I travelled to Izmir from London to tell you the dance stories of my city. And in this video we are going to Tire that is 80 kilometers away from Izmir to discover its history, nature, culture, food and essentially dance. The dance instructor Halil Altin is guiding us through this 4000 thousand years old historical town. Halil is a dancer and folk dance teacher; and he is performing zeybek for us, a very popular Turkish folk dance in the Aegean region. We are also meeting with the students of Halil. They are getting ready for a folk dance competition; and in the middle of their rehearsals they perform their zeybek choreography for us so enthusiastically! They are so talented and so friendly; we are so lucky to have met them. All in all in this video you’ll be meeting with lovely people in a naturally beautiful town that is accompanied by amazing dance performances.
