Abstract from Gil Kalai: Quantum computers are fascinating hypothetical powerful computers and the debate regarding their possibility represents one of the most important scientific problems of our time. My theory asserts that building scalable quantum computers and even reaching certain significant early milestones towards them are fundamentally impossible. I argue that noisy intermediate scale quantum computers exhibit only a low-level (classical) computational capability, and they inherently display noise-sensitive behavior. These characteristics imply that, for intermediate-scale quantum systems, neither a demonstration of "quantum computational supremacy" nor the implementation of high-quality quantum error-correcting codes is achievable. Consequently, this implies that large-scale quantum computers based on quantum error correction are fundamentally unattainable. In the lecture I will also describe the progress of the last decade in building quantum computers. Largely, this progress is consistent with my theory, and a few fantastic claims that were in conflict with my theory were falsified. In any case, it is hard to reconcile the current progress with a reality where Shor's algorithm becomes practical in the next few decades.
