(1 Sep 1998) French/Nat Congo's western war front fell largely quiet on Monday after rebel forces withdrew over the weekend from their last strongholds. Sporadic resistance triggered fire fights in a corridor of land that runs from Kinshasa to the Atlantic coastline, but the wholesale combat of recent weeks died off. President Laurent Kabila has declared victory in the west and said his allies would now turn their attention to rebel territory in the east. Rebel forces on Monday acknowledged the loss of the towns of Matadi and Inga, but say the fight in the Democratic Republic of Congo against President Laurent Kabila, isn't over. They say they'll reorganize and wage a guerrilla war that could drag on for months or years. In Bukavu, rebel commander, Jean-Pierre Ondekane was rallying his troops. Ondekane has been gathering rebel forces together in a bid to re-group and possibly move them to other fronts. He explained to them why rebel forces have retreated from some areas during the past week. SOUNDBITE: (French) "We promise not to destroy the dam at Inga. Now we've seen foreign troops move in, who might want to sabotage this electric works. We decided that if we resist, everything would be destroyed. We prefer to leave the dam without combat so that it will remain intact." SUPER CAPTION: Jean-Pierre Ondekane On the outskirts of the rebel camp, soldiers patrol day and night. The hills around Bukavu are insecure and the rebels are on the lookout for soldiers of different ethnic factions. Throughout southwestern Congo, Angolan and Zimbabwean troops have carried the load for the government against the rebels.
