In Promoting the Cut-Off, we'll learn out how the Lackawanna Cut-Off and the Paulins Kill Viaduct went from obscurity to near-instant fame with one publication of Tel-News, which went out with two million phone bills from New Jersey Bell in July 1990. The timing couldn't have been better, as Chuck will describe, as a $25 million bond issue had just been approved by voters in New Jersey the previous November, and those monies were now up for grabs. Chuck will interview Don Maxton, who authored the Tel-News article, as well as several articles which Don will also talk about. We'll learn how these articles originated, as some were proposed internally at New Jersey Bell or, as in the case of the Cut-Off article, from outside of New Jersey Bell. The Newark Public Library in Newark, NJ was chosen as the venue for the interview not only because of its proximity to where the articles were written--literally across the street--but also because of the Tel-News articles over the years of its publication (1935-1992) that were researched at the library, and that the library also has an archive of every one of those Tel-News articles. Thirty-five years has passed since the Tel-News article appeared, but it still remains as the single most successful promotion of the Lackawanna Cut-Off to date.
