Don't buy the RODE VideoMicro II until you've watch this video - Distortion & clipping with Sony ZV-1 Just a quick heads up to anyone thinking about buying the new RODE VideoMicro II. Unfortunately, it suffers the same distortion and clipping problem as the RODE VideoMic II and the RODE VideoMic NTG. This means that with certain video cameras, camcorders and cameras, the output of the RODE VideoMicro II will be too loud for the 3.5mm microphone input on certain cameras. Basically, certain peak transients from the RODE VideoMicro 2 will be too loud for the input stage and microphone preamp for certain cameras. This results in momentary overloading of the microphone input, input stage, for the microphone preamplifier on certain cameras. This is technically known as clipping but is commonly known as distortion. These loud peak transients from the RODE VideoMicro II are basically generating a peak voltage which is too much for the microphone input on certain cameras. In this example I'm using the Sony ZV-1. This is not too say that this problem with the RODE VideoMicro II will be the same on all cameras, it won't. However, I have 7 cameras/camcorders and so far this problem occurs on three of them, all Sony. As far as I can see, it would appear that RODE have given certain video microphones of theirs, louder than necessary outputs. Maybe this is because many people think that a loud output equates to a good microphone and RODE are playing to certain common misconceptions about microphones and what makes a good mic. Too be clear. A loud output from a microphone doesn't mean that it is a sensitive microphone or a good microphone. It just means that the mic is loud on its output. Take a Sure SM7B as an example. It is by many standards an insensitive microphone and has a very low output. However, if you use a Cloudlifter or FetHead with an SM7B it will suddenly appear to be a more sensitive mic with a louder output. This is due to the pre-gain applied by the likes of a Cloudlifter or FetHead. The likes of the RODE VideoMicro II can have a similar pre-gain inside the microphone circuitry. This type of pre-gain can be powered by the ECM Electret voltage, or plugin power, that is sent from a camera's microphone input, which is similar to Phantom Power. Indeed, I have a microphone pre-gain unit that works from ECM Electret power and it can gain by 22db. Now, I'm not saying that this is how RODE are achieving their loud output. However, in all my time using and building ECM microphones, I have never come across any ECM capsules that are as loud as these recent RODE microphones. It is feasible that RODE are using the ECM Electret power from the camera's microphone input to power the ECM capsule in certain mics of theirs and to also provide a certain amount of pre-gain. Or, maybe RODE have managed to make very loud ECM capsules. Regardless of how this loud microphone output is being achieved, it is too loud for certain cameras and will cause clipping and distortion with certain cameras.
