Nature Air won a global environmental award for its work in protecting Costa Rica’s rainforests and setting up small schools in remote places to help educate children via their NatureKids Foundation. At the time of our filming, they were flying brightly painted De Havilland DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft. Nature Air took visitors into remote and wild parts of Costa Rica. All of the airline’s profits were put into their rainforest protection work and their NatureKids Foundation. We trekked into the rainforest to show how the scheme paid local people to create buffer zones and wildlife corridors connecting some of the most biodiverse forests on Earth. These zones protect the national parks from poaching and illegal encroachment. We made this film in 2010. The challenge for me as cameraman was to be able to get some shots of two of their aircraft flying over the rainforest and coastline. This involved removing the passenger door from a small Cessna plane, being strapped into the seat and filming though the open space where the door had been. It meant getting the two Twin Otters and the Cessna in exact alignment with the background below to get the shots and proved to be a significant challenge.
