APPLIED RESEARCH GLOBAL FREEDOM IN ENERGY ACTION DEFECTS. Progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7)—ensuring affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all—remains significantly off track for the 2030 deadline. While global electricity access has reached 92%, a critical gap remains in Sub-Saharan Africa, which now accounts for 85% of the world’s unconnected population. Furthermore, 2.1 billion people still lack access to clean cooking fuels, a deficit that disproportionately impacts women and children. While international public financial flows to developing countries reached USD 21.6 billion in 2023, these levels remain below the 2016 peak. To bridge these gaps, the global energy landscape is shifting toward technological innovation and hybrid systems. Emerging solutions—such as tri-hybrid power generation (solar-wind-hydro), transparent solar cells for urban infrastructure, and optimized Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs)—offer promising pathways to increase efficiency and resilience. However, achieving universal access and tripling renewable capacity by 2030 will require an estimated USD 4.2–4.5 trillion in annual investment and a fundamental shift in energy production and distribution. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Global Progress Toward SDG 7 Targets The following table summarizes the primary indicators of global progress as of the latest reporting cycles (2022–2023).
