There is Big Data and Small Data within healthcare. There is a place for both. While Big Data can help identify where organizations need to focus, Small Data is best for drilling into the data and assisting organizations with taking deliberate action to achieve quality improvement. Small Data tools can be customized for specific interventions and changed quickly when needed. She began her career conducting research into substance use, which continues presently in her leadership role with the HEALing Communities Study (HCS), a NIDA-funded research study across four states to reduce the impact of the opioid epidemic. Dr. Kerner is passionate about leadership and program development that is driven by innovation, quality improvement and transparency. Dr. Kerner has designed and implemented programs at both state and local levels, spanning the public and private sectors. She was responsible for a major reorganization of outpatient services at one of New York City’s largest hospital systems and moved on to a director role with oversight of quality improvement activities for behavioral health. She also held a leadership role at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and prior to her current position, was engaged as a consultant with the New York State Department of Health to implement the $8 billion Delivery System Reform Incentive Program (DSRIP). In that capacity, Dr. Kerner supported efforts across the state to redesign Medicaid service delivery and directed initiatives around mental health and primary care integration, cultural competency and health literacy, workforce innovation, and best practice identification and dissemination utilizing quality improvement methodology. Prior to earning her PhD in Clinical Psychology, Dr. Kerner was a television producer and was honored twice with a “30 Under 30 Award,” which recognized the top up-and-coming business journalists under the age of 30. Her work at Wall Street Journal Television was also nominated for an Emmy Award. Dr. Kerner holds a PhD from the City University of New York and a BS in Economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
