Kyiv artist couple reclaim Ukraine’s cultural heritage uniting fragmented parts in a new mosaic

Monumental landmarks leftover from Ukraine’s Soviet era, the vast mosaics scaling Kyiv’s walls are at once a symbol of Ukrainian cultural heritage and a reminder of the spread of propaganda through its streets. Ravaged by war, and falling into disrepair – chiselled away by modernization – preserving the mosaics has become an important act of resistance, recognizing their significance to the nation’s art history as their presence is threatened by Russian occupation. As the artist couple behind Kyiv art collective LISOVA 3, Svitlana Hryb and Serhii Spizhovyi are reclaiming the mosaics’ legacy by developing a large-scale street memorial from found fragments, approaching art as a metaphor for preserving Ukrainian identity.
