Leopold Stokowski once said that Tchaikovsky was one of his favourite composers and his immense discography supplies the proof. His earliest recording, the 'Dance of the Flutes' from the "Nutcracker" Suite, was made on a primitive acoustic 78rpm disc in 1922, while his last Tchaikovsky recording, 'Aurora's Wedding' from "The Sleeping Beauty," dates from 1976, the year before his death at the age of 95. Among his numerous Tchaikovsky recordings were three devoted to the dramatic interpretation of the tragic tale of "Francesca da Rimini." She fell in love with her husband's cruel brother who discovered them in close embrace and killed them both. For their sinful adulterous passions, they were condemned to whirl around endlessly in Hell, trapped in a violent storm. Stokowski evoked this brilliant symphonic tone poem superbly in all three of his recordings: with the New York Philharmonic in 1947; the New York Stadium Symphony in 1958; and the version heard here, with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by a very great maestro in his 93rd year.
