Walking through Murino - the most highly-populated city in Leningrad region of Russia. The population is about 112,000 residents. It is located right north of St Petersburg. For this reason, many people even mistakenly think that Murino is just one of the new districts in the north of St Petersburg. Murino received city status in 2019, making it one of Russia's newest cities. At the same time, Murino has become one of the most criticized new cities in Russia. Being developed mostly on empty flatland, its planning has focused primarily on high-rise residential buildings without many cultural buildings and park zones. This constantly triggers significant criticism from urbanists. Settlements in the territory of the contemporary city of Murino existed supposedly yet in 9-12th century, and used to belong to finno-ugric tribes. These lands long remained disputed territory in Russo-Swedish conflicts. They were permanently secured for Russia in 1721 under the Treaty of Nystad. The existence of the village of Murino has been known since the second half of the 17th century. The first cartographic mention of the settlement Murino appears in 1676. From the mid-18th century until 1917, the Vorontsov and Shuvalov families owned most of the village of Murino. Because of this, Murino now has streets named Shuvalov Street and Vorontsovsky Boulevard. In the early 19th century, the lands of Murino began to be leased out. The first summer residents appeared there, and houses were built for the Prussian consul Johann Massa and English merchant Ronald. In the 19th century, Murino became a summer vacation spot. In 1804, English merchant Thomas Sievers built a house in Murino, and soon an entire English Prospect formed here, with a golf course being laid out. In 1978, the metro station "Komsomolskaya" (since 1992 - "Devyatkino") was built. Since the late 2000s, active construction of 16-27 story brick-monolithic buildings began. A sharp population increase occurred after 2010. Mass construction and housing commissioning started. In 2014, the 265th anniversary of the Murino settlement was celebrated. As of 2025, about 112,000 people live in Murino. According to the head of Murino’s administration, the city gains 25,000 residents each year. The Leningrad region is the area surrounding St. Petersburg (called Leningrad in Soviet times). It could be called the St. Petersburg region now, but while the city of Leningrad was renamed back to 'St. Petersburg' in 1991, the Leningrad region kept its name.
