S：Hi guys, this is S. 欢迎大家收听早安英文 B：前段时间放假，有朋友去国外玩，发给我一张这样的照片，路边的标识上竟然写着汉语拼音，xing S：行，行走的那个行吗 B：对，四个字母，x-i-n-g，她就问我，怎么还有拼音呢，那写着xing的地方是不是表示可以走呢 S：对，不只是指示牌，有的地方路上也有，但是这真的不是拼音，而且没有理解到，还会很危险，If you see the sign and you just cross the road, it's gonna be very dangerous. S：对，字母x其实用来代替/k/，/iks/这些相近的发音，比如最常见的圣诞节，Christmas，就可以简单写成 Xmas B：比如索尼有个XMB系统，全称就是 Xross Media Bar，这个X就是Cross S：对，那在英语中，交叉路口，十字路口是 crossing，所以x-ing，其实就是crossing，meaning it's a place where two lines, two roads or two tracks cross B：Yup, and the word, ped, is short for this word, pedestrian, menaing a person walking in the street and not travelling in a vehicle，也就是行人的意思，所以ped crossing意思其实就是行人过马路的地方 S：Yeah，A place where pedestrians are permitted to or advised to cross a street. 在其他的地区还有这个名字，crosswalk B：而且crossing还可以表示有动物会经过此处，It serves as a warming for people to pay more attention to the animals nearby. S：Right, For example, you might see the sign, turtle xing, duck xing, deer xing, or sheep xing. B：后面几个大家应该都还是好理解吧，duck，有鸭子经过，deer，有鹿，sheep有绵羊，但是第一个是turtle，可能会有乌龟经过 S：Yes, that's a real one. S：Then I'm gonna be furious. 这种趁虚而入，来横插一脚的人很可恶，所以没人喜欢别人 swoop in B：ok，还有一些有爱的标识，比如这个，low flying owls，警告，此处有低空飞行的猫头鹰 S：It just occured to me that I've never seen an owl in real life. B：Yeah, an owl is not often seen, except when you're in Harry Potter's magic world. S：haha right, an owl might swoop down over your head and drop a letter or a package. B：And here's one with pigeon.
