I took advantage of a decent amount of late summer rain and warm fall temperatures to plant Joshua Trees at my house. It's my second season sprouting Joshua Trees. Last year I was heartbroken that of 24 sprouts only 3 survived, This year, I had 5 new sprouts. This is the story of growing one from seed to in the ground which is the best chance for survival. I found the dried seed pods underneath an elder tree I estimate to be at least 300 years old. Miraculously, this tree has barely escaped development. It stands on the edge of the highway in the Travelodge's parking lot!! Against all odds, neither birds, squirrels, chipmunks, Yucca Moth larvae or desperate coyotes consumed these pods. Following the natural cycle of growth, I planted seeds in early October.I had sprouts by mid November. Getting established in the ground before winter is critical so that they young sprouts get winter rain, snow and cooler temperatures, before their first desert summer next year. Follow my steps, up the hill to plant "Grow-Goo" in its native desert home, repopulating the ancient Joshua Tree forest one tree at a time!
