Today we're looking at one of the most interesting artistic movements of the 20th century's impact on watch design. From its roots in World War One to an item in the catalogue of Cartier and Swatch, Surrealism has had a major impact on the world of watches, even spawning the odd Audermars Piguet and Rolex piece. We'll delve deep into the works of Salvador Dali, who's 1931 painting "The Persistence of Memory" turned the watch into a motif of the Surrealist movement. I'll then be turning our attention to how the modern watch industry implements the guiding philosophy of the movement into its designs through British watchmake Mr Jones Watches, Franck Muller with the Crazy Hands and the unsettling design of a Konstanin Chaykin watch like the Dracula. 00:00 - Introduction 01:20 - Surrealists and Salvador Dali 03:45 - The Cartier Crash Story 06:22 - The Modern Surrealist Watch 👉 Subscribe to Doug’s Watches – the thinking watch channel – and hit that notification bell to overthink some watches with me.
