n this video, Antoinette Badenhorst demonstrates her unique technique for creating porcelain bowls by draping thin slabs of clay over balloons. Over the years, Antoinette has developed a variety of bowls using this handbuilding approach. Some resemble delicate eggshell forms, while others sit on foot rims, pedestals, or organically shaped clay bases. The bowls range from functional pieces—such as soup and dessert bowls—to more expressive artistic vessels. Forming Porcelain Bowls Over Balloons The process begins by cutting circular shapes from a thin slab of porcelain clay. Antoinette demonstrates how to carefully lift the clay without stretching or distorting it before draping it over a prepared balloon. She also explains how the balloons are prepared so they can be safely deflated after the clay has formed its shape. Unlike her usual porcelain slabs, which are rolled extremely thin, the slabs used in this technique are slightly thicker. This allows enough clay for shaping while still ensuring the finished bowls remain strong and functional. Working with Porcelain Slabs Porcelain typically requires very little water during forming. However, when draping slabs over balloons, Antoinette shows how adding the right amount of moisture helps the clay mold smoothly around the curved surface. Once the clay is shaped, it must sit undisturbed until it reaches the leather-hard stage. This step is important because removing the balloon too soon can cause the form to collapse, while waiting too long may cause cracking on the hump mold. Throughout the demonstration, Antoinette discusses common mistakes potters may encounter and offers practical solutions for correcting them. Learn Handbuilding Porcelain Dinnerware Antoinette invites potters to explore this technique further in her handbuilding dinnerware workshop through TeachinArt, the online ceramics school she founded with her husband Koos Badenhorst. In this workshop, she teaches potters how to create a complete porcelain dinnerware set without using a pottery wheel, including: Porcelain pitchers Cups and bowls Plates Decanters Salt and pepper shakers This class focuses on transforming simple porcelain slabs into elegant, functional forms through thoughtful hand-building techniques. https://www.porcelainbyantoinette.com... porcelain hand-building, porcelain bowls over balloons, handbuilding porcelain pottery, porcelain slab techniques, pottery without a wheel, ceramic bowl making, porcelain dinnerware making, handbuilt pottery bowls, porcelain pottery tutorial, ceramics slab building, translucent porcelain techniques, porcelain pottery workshop, ceramic handbuilding techniques, TeachinArt pottery classes, Antoinette Badenhorst pottery This video is created on Power Director by Koos Badenhorst with music provided by Power Director.
