Forming Porcelain Bowls Over Balloons The process begins by cutting circular shapes from a thin slab of porcelain clay. Antoinette demonstrates how to carefully lift the clay without stretching or distorting it before draping it over a prepared balloon. She also explains how the balloons are prepared so they can be safely deflated after the clay has formed its shape. Unlike her usual porcelain slabs, which are rolled extremely thin, the slabs used in this technique are slightly thicker. This allows enough clay for shaping while still ensuring the finished bowls remain strong and functional. Working with Porcelain Slabs Porcelain typically requires very little water during forming. However, when draping slabs over balloons, Antoinette shows how adding the right amount of moisture helps the clay mold smoothly around the curved surface.
