JOIN BROADCAST PLAZA TODAY, DISCORD'S MEDIA DISCUSSION COMMUNITY — http://bit.ly/S31MA Open from the combined morning newscast on KPHO CBS 5 and independent KTVK 3TV in Phoenix, Arizona both owned by Meredith Corporation. The two stations have been increasing the amount of simulcasts since the start of the pandemic as a cost control measure and to reduce redundancy. For now until the new graphics debut Monday, the two stations are using KTVK's graphics and music for most simulcasts (except the noon which uses KPHO's graphics and music). This will change however. For those who follow the market, you'll know "Arizona's Family" is the longtime slogan at KTVK and an offshoot of their "Arizona's News People" campaign in the late 80s and early 90s. When Meredith took over it became more of a combined branding to refer to the two stations. They also consolidated their web presence at azfamily.com which had been just KTVK's site before the buyout. The two stations are in KTVK's (fairly large) building which also housed other businesses when KTVK was still a locally owned station. The Meredith Phoenix duop for the most part puts put a good product. The one thing that irks me is the use of Calibri for the "Arizona's Family" font. If there's three fonts in my opinion that should never be used on TV it would be: Comic Sans, Calibri and Times New Roman, in that order. I can tell you that will be continuing in their new look if promos are any indication. The music is Propulsion V.1 from 615 Music. The opens do not contain any voiceover but the station voice is Brian Lee (with Steve Wood for sponsor bumps; both are from KTVK pre-Meredith). Anchors are Tess Rafols, Gina Maravilla, and meteorologist April Warnecke (again all veterans of KTVK before Meredith took over, are you sensing a pattern here?). Hint: KTVK was the stronger station dating back to its days as the market's ABC affiliate while KPHO has long struggled in the ratings since becoming a CBS affiliate after being a heritage independent (imagine if KPHO had signed up with Fox instead of passing it over in 1986 - there very well may have been no affiliation changes). ©2020 Meredith Corporation and KPHO-TV/KTVK-TV, no copyright infringement intended.
