mmmm listening to some light static while being fully wrapped in a fluffy blanket on a cold night What could be said about this piece that hasn't been said already? One of the most beloved concertos, Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto deserves every fame it gets. The textures are atmospheric—sometimes hypnotic, especially in the second movement—and each movement has some of R.'s best and most celebrated melodies (2:13, 11:07, 23:53). While it's considerably less extreme than the other concertos, it isn't any less dramatic; there's a lot of contrast and tension that always keeps the audience on their toes. It's also relatively less dense in texturing, allowing the pure, unadulterated beauty to really shine through. Gieseking’s playing is like a whisper; long, continuous phrases, warm and intimate tone, and rubato that is as free and natural as a deep breath. Yet he’s not only soft and gentle; when he chooses to be loud, it’s not merely loud; it’s explosive and cataclysmic, like a musical bomb. Gieseking follows his own impulses and emotions, commanding the entire score rather than being controlled by it. The result is a soulful transformation that, even in the quietest passages, speaks volumes louder than most other recordings. And of course, the conductor cannot go unmentioned. Mengelberg does a brilliant job keeping up with Gieseking's unpredictable playing, and he allows each and every melody of the orchestra to be expressed clearly. He also adds something extra to the music as well; see 4:06. While most performances have the orchestra rushing past the excerpt, Mengelberg deliberately slows down to enhance the drama.
