No matter how hard we try, it may be that the tracks we record are simply too “hot” when we come to mix down, so we end up pulling back the individual channel faders to compensate. The problem with that is, the more you pull the faders back, the more impact each little change has on the overall level. Like the real world faders they mimic, DAW faders tend to be logarithmic in scale, otherwise they never reach –infinity at the bottom, (unless you had a VERY long screen, that is). So how to get the best of both worlds – setting each track to a reasonable level before you start mixing, whilst leaving all of the faders at 0.
